AICESIS work in progress

ECOSOC Working Group: « How to ensure the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to those for Sustainable Development? ». In its capacity as Chair of this group, the Algerian CNES prepared a first note transmitted to all AICESIS members and aimed at collecting their views.

On December 10 - 11 2014, the AICESIS Board was held under the Presidency of Mr. Evgeny VELIKHOV in Rabat (Morocco), at the premises of the ESEC of Morocco. An international workshop on civil dialogue and participatory democracy, jointly organized by AICESIS and the ESEC, was for the first time linked to the Board. Thanks to the quality of the organization and the hosting of the Moroccan ESEC, these two events were run in excellent conditions. As pointed out by the summary of decisions adopted during the Board meeting, outcomes were particularly satisfactory. A report summarizing the debates occurred during the workshop will be sent out soon. 

International Conference of Seoul on « The role of ESCs and similar social dialogue institutions in promoting social protection floors for all» : Organized by the AICESIS in partnership with the ILO and the CDES of Korea on November 20 and 21 in Seoul, this event was successful thanks to the high number and the quality of participants and speakers. The event beneficiated from the impeccable organization ensured by the Korean ESDC and the commitment of many AICESIS members attending the meeting. At the closure of the event, all participants adopted the Declaration of Seoul aimed at promoting a fair social protection floor for all. A Summary Report will be sent out soon.

ILO Working Group: « Small and medium-sized enterprises and the creation of decent and productive employment opportunities ». The ESC of Luxembourg, as Chair of this group, will prepare a draft note to be sent to all AICESIS members in order to collect their views.

29-30 October 2015 (The Hague, Netherlands): International conference organized in cooperation with the ILO and the SER on "Promoting workplace compliance including in global supply chains: the role of ESCs and similar social dialogue institutions". On 3 June, a questionnaire was sent to all social dialogue institutions. The number and quality of answers will prepare the background paper for the conference (soon available).

On the occasion of the Presidential Elections resulting in the reelection of Mrs. Dilma ROUSEFF, an article written by Mr. Jacy Afonso on the importance of the CDES and its role in the contribution to social dialogue and participatory democracy was published on the CDES’ website.

Burundi: Mrs. Stella BIZONGWAKO’s term as President of the ESEC of Burundi ended in November 2014. The new President in office is Mrs. Denise Sinankwa.

Europe: On November 11, on the occasion of its last meeting, the European Economic and Social Committee unanimously adopted the Council’s contribution to the 2015 Working Program of the European Commission. This paper clearly pointed out those areas the European Civil Society has been expecting the new team at the head of the Commission will commit to for the upcoming year.

France: The ESEC submitted a proposal for the development of common territorial projects aimed at the advancement of sustainable tourism as well as the promotion of tourism as a better-allocated and most respectful resource towards environment and local features. The text also called for the development of diversified accommodation arrangements as well as for the improvement of sustainable transport services for tourists and the promotion of trainings to support employment and encourage tourism governance.

Gabon:  The majority of the ESC members adopted an opinion on the amended version of the finance bill for 2014. This note pointed out the need of taking into consideration the National Social Pact as a strategy for poverty reduction, for continuing and accelerating the implementation of the national plan on infrastructures as well as the national industrialization strategy, the rationalization of public expenditures and improved revenue optimization.

Senegal: The Commission for Gender Equity and Good Governance of the Economic, Social and Environmental (ESEC) submitted a report on 'Women's rights: achievements, challenges and prospects.' In this report, the Council pointed out on the importance to build childcare facilities in prisons for children of women prisoners.

Sharm-El-Sheik (Egypt, 16-18 December): Summit of Arab-speaking ESCs to establish an Arab Association of ESCs.

On October 31, after 7 years as Head of the ILO Bureau in France, Mr. Jean-François TROGRLIC resigned. His work has been very useful, especially for AICESIS since he had a crucial role in strengthening links and cooperation between the two institutions. Thanks to his efforts, an AICESIS-ILO cooperation agreement was notably signed in May 2012. His successor is Mr. Cyril COSME.

EUROSOCIAL : A conference organized by the European ESC and the Spanish ESC took place on December 16 at the European ESC premises in Brussels (Belgium) to launch the book “The ESCs in Latin America  and the EU”.
